HEALING OF COPENHAGEN MISTRUST BETWEEN RICH AND POOR COUNTRIES
15 April 2010
Following a 3 day UN meeting at Bonn all 180 countries have agreed to submit new proposals to the UN greatly increasing the chance of a deal.
At Copenhagen the G77 grouping of more than 100 developing countries including China, clashed with a small group of nations, including Britain, who pushed through a weak deal that would not save vulnerable countries from the impact of global warming.
The present compromise came after a late-night showdown between the US and developing countries. It is seen as progress but there is no chance of reaching a final deal by November, the next world leaders’ meeting in Mexico, says De Boer, the outgoing head of the United Nations Framework Convention in Climate Change.
