    Obama and cabinet officials have announced that$8.3bn is being awarded in loan guarantees for Southern Company, building the first nuclear reactors in America for 30 years.

    Expanding nuclear power is one of the few elements of Obama’s energy and climate agenda to win broad based support. The pledge to the nuclear industry is seen as part of a strategy to win Republican support for the climate and energy bill in Congress.
