PRESENT ENERGY BILLS TO LOW TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
29 June 2009
In a Royal Society study published 0n 29th June, the experts say that consumers will need to pay more for energy, so that the UK can develop technologies needed to tackle climate change.
The leading scientists and engineers involved in the report, say that the government must put research into alternatives to fossil fuels much higher amongst its priorities.
The recent Dept., of Energy and Climate Change proposals on carbon capture and storage were an example of a half-hearted approach. John Shepherd, a climate scientist at Southampton University and co-author of the report has said that there should be “no new coal unless you have 90% emissions reduction by 2020. That is achievable and if that were a clear signal, industry would get on and do it”.
The Royal Society report argues that energy policy has been too fragmented and short-term in its outlook, and what is needed is a portfolio of solutions
